The President announced that the task force logo competition winner is Steffanie Hobbs and she will receive the $25.00 gift card.  The logo design, after some revisions, will be distributed to task force members.

New Business

The Treasurer reported on recent bank account activity and that she has filed tax form 990 as required.

Task Force members who attended the 18th Annual Stop Violence Against Women Day reported on their experiences.  The consensus was that this was the largest crowd ever allowing advocates to network, learn about current public policy issues and meet with their elected representatives.  An article from the Georgia Commission on Family Violence about the event and entitled Georgia Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Groups Urge Lawmakers to Strengthen Family Violence Laws and Protect Victims was handed out and can be accessed at https://gcfv.georgia.gov/press-releases/2017-02-09/georgia-domestic-violence-and-sexual-assault-groups-urge-lawmakers

Presentation

Roseanna Szabo, Solicitor General for Gwinnett County, visited the task force to give us an overview of their caseload and how her office deals with domestic violence crimes.  The Gwinnett County Solicitor’s Office serves our county by prosecuting all state misdemeanor crimes.  A misdemeanor is a crime which is punishable by twelve months in jail or less.  In 2016, her office handled approximately 8,800 cases.  Approximately a quarter of those cases were crimes against persons such as domestic violence.  The Solicitor’s Office develops a relationship with the domestic violence victim as early as possible.  The Solicitor’s Office has six Victim Witness Coordinators to assist domestic violence victims.  Their office fast tracks cases whenever possible to ensure successful prosecutions. They also utilize an investigator to hand serve subpoenas which has decreased the likelihood of case dismissals.  Ms. Szabo introduced a number of the staff to the task force and passed out a brochure that her office provides to victims about domestic violence, safety planning and resources for victims of violent crimes.  For more information about the Gwinnett County Solicitor’s Office, please visit https://www.gwinnettcounty.com/portal/gwinnett/Departments/Solicitor

The task force wants to encourage networking and education of those involved in the fight against domestic violence by hosting presentations and/or speakers. Please contact our President if you have a suggestion for a presentation or speaker at our meetings.

Task Force members are encouraged to attend the 18th Annual Stop Violence Against Women Day.  Registration for 2017 is still at https://gcfv.georgia.gov/events/2016-10-14/stop-violence-against-women-day This event is sponsored by the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the Georgia Network to End Sexual Assault, the Georgia Commission on Family Violence, Raksha, Caminar Latino and Men Stopping Violence and is sponsored by Mary Kay.  Come out for breakfast with Legislators, networking with advocates and to learn about our current public policy issues.

Task Force members discussed the current legislative session and the current firearm proposal for Georgia law to mirror current federal law that allows domestic violence perpetrators who possess a firearm or ammunition to be prosecuted for a felony.  The current proposal would also make it a felony under Georgia law if a perpetrator who is subject to a domestic violence Temporary Protective Order and possesses a firearm or ammunition during the term of the Temporary Protective Order, which would make it possible for local law enforcement to charge perpetrators.

Task Force members also discussed the Georgia Domestic Violence Bench Book.  The current edition can be found at http://icje.uga.edu/domesticviolencebenchbook.html
